The Cultural Resources Section is responsible for:

  • Compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act
  • Following both federal and state laws and regulations that help protect historic properties
  • Maintaining a staff of professionals with expertise on archeology, historic properties, history, and historic preservation
  • Conducting archeological and structural surveys to identify and evaluate historic properties within and/or adjacent to highway project corridors
  • Consulting with the State Historic Preservation Officer, the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program, interested parties, and the public about cultural resources
  • Coordinating with the Federal Highway Administration on consultation with federal recognized Native American tribes
  • Maintaining the Historic Bridge Program by updating inventories and coordinating preservation efforts for historic bridges
  • Coordinating with engineers and construction personnel on minimization and/or avoidance of cultural resources
