A roundabout is a circular intersection in which traffic travels counterclockwise around a central island. Traffic yields to vehicles inside the roundabout before entering and then proceed to their desired exit. This simple design is becoming increasingly popular for its safety, mobility, and maintenance advantages.
The benefits of a roundabout are numerous. The design naturally encourages lower travel speeds at the intersection, which gives drivers more time to react, and also decreases crash severity. Furthermore, a roundabout can greatly decrease motorist delay, particularly at off-peak times. Instead of waiting for a traffic signal to turn green, drivers can enter at the first opportunity.
