Lanes Closed on Highway 223 Over Big Creek Near Viola

FULTON COUNTY | September 11, 2024

A bridge crossing Big Creek south of Viola has been closed to one travel lane following a routine bridge inspection.

A temporary traffic signal has been installed, directing traffic to the center lane of the bridge. Expect delays as only one direction of traffic will be able to pass at a time.

Crews are examining the best course of action, and the lane closures will be in place until repairs are complete.

Construction is underway on a new Highway 223 bridge over Big Creek. It was let to contract in May of 2024, and the current estimated completion is mid-2026. The existing Highway 223 bridge remains in use until the new bridge is ready for traffic. These repairs will keep the current bridge functional until the replacement is ready.

Traffic will be controlled with the use of barrels, signage, and signals.

Drivers are urged to use caution while traveling in the area.
