The Federal Highway Administration has approved the Arkansas Department of Transportation’s (ARDOT) request for a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) and identified the Selected Alternative for the Highway 112 widening projects between Highway 412 and Highway 12. The approval of the FONSI marks the end of the environmental phase and the beginning of the right-of-way acquisition phase for the projects. Construction of these projects is currently scheduled to begin in 2025.
The project proposes to address the existing and forecasted highway congestion issues on Highway 112 and accommodate bicyclists and pedestrians on the corridor by widening Highway 112 to four travel lanes with a raised median, curb and gutter, a sidewalk on one side of the highway, and a side path on the other side of the highway. Eight roundabouts would be constructed at existing intersections.
Alternative E2 was selected for Job 012305, Highway 412 to the Springdale Northern Bypass (Highway 612), due to its preference by the public and the City of Elm Springs, its lower total cost, and fewer relocation impacts.
Alternative C3 was selected for Job 090513, the Springdale Northern Bypass to West Wallis Road, due to lower environmental impacts compared to the other build alternatives.
Alternative B2 was selected for Job 090514, West Wallis Road to Pleasant Grove Road, and Job 090636, Pleasant Grove Road to Highway 12, due to its lower cost and fewer relocation impacts.
The Selected Alternative, preliminary design, and FONSI document can be viewed at the project website.
